Naturalization Ceremony

WHS hosted a naturalization ceremony for candidates for U.S. citizenship this morning. The ceremony was proposed by our Social Studies department, which collaborated with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in South Portland As Mr. Ruthman, the Social Studies Department Leader, said, “One of our school’s visions for our graduates is to be responsible and involved citizens, and there’s no better example of us achieving that vision than our students participating in and observing the citizenship process in action.” The ceremony itself featured two speeches made by Westbrook High School students; two musical performances by Westbrook High School choral members; and speeches by Westbrook Schools superintendent Dr. Peter Lancia, Westbrook City Council vice president Anna A. Turcotte, and Grace Mo-Phillips of the CEI Institute. “Our schools reflect and serve our communities,” Mr. Ruthman observed, “and this event is a perfect illustration of our high school reflecting and serving the community of Westbrook.”
